Broadway Shows with Puppets

by Kathryn Willingham

When you think of puppets, you might think of Sesame Street or Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood or Lambchop. You might even think that puppets are always meant for children. But they have always had a place in theater, from a Punch and Judy puppet show in the 1600s all the way through to The Lion King today. And they have been included in both shows geared toward children (Winnie the Pooh just made a splash off-Broadway) and shows meant decidedly for adults (looking at you, Avenue Q). That tradition continues, and you can see these shows on Broadway right now!

Live Musicals

by Kathryn Willingham

Live TV Musicals have become more and more popular over the last decade. As opposed to movie adaptations or pro-shots (musicals that are professionally filmed live on stage but edited and released later – think Hamilton on Disney+ or Come From Away on AppleTV+), a live tv musical is filmed and broadcast live especially for television. It’s less about recreating the feeling of in person, live theater and more about creating something entirely distinct and new.
