April in New York City feels like a true arrival of spring, with cherry blossoms in bloom, longer days, and an unmistakable buzz across the theater district. It’s one of the most electric times of the year on Broadway, as productions race toward the Tony Awards eligibility cutoff, the deadline by which all shows must open to be considered for this season’s honors (this year’s deadline is April 26, 2026). The result is a packed, high-stakes month, with nearly every stage in action: an extraordinary 40 of the 41 Broadway theaters are open for business. Whether you’re catching a buzzy new opening, a student planning spring break getaway, or squeezing in one more must-see before nominations are announced, April offers a thrilling snapshot of Broadway at full bloom.

Schmigadoon!

Schmigadoon! makes the leap from screen to stage as a joyous, genre-loving Broadway musical packed with Golden Age flair and modern wit. Following a couple (Alex Brightman and Sara Chase) who stumble into a mysterious town where life unfolds like a classic musical, the show lovingly spoofs and celebrates the conventions of musical theater, complete with big production numbers, earnest romance, and a few unexpected twists.

Becky Shaw

Becky Shaw, written by Gina Gionfriddo and directed by Trip Cullman, plays on Broadway at the Hayes Theater. When a couple is set up on a blind date by some well-meaning friends, things begin to spiral out of control. After hit runs Off-Broadway and in London, this play finally gets its Broadway debut starring The Pitt’s Patrick Ball and The Handmaid’s Tale’s Madeline Brewer.

Death of a Salesman

Death of a Salesman returns in a powerful new staging at the Winter Garden Theatre, directed by Joe Mantello and starring Nathan Lane and Laurie Metcalf. In Arthur Miller’s Pulitzer Prize–winning drama, Willy and Linda Loman confront the unraveling of their dreams and ambitions in a play that is widely regarded as a cornerstone of American theater. This revival brings fresh urgency to a timeless story, led by two of the stage’s most acclaimed performers.

Dog Day Afternoon is set in 1970s NYC and is written by Stephen Adly Guirgis directed by Rupert Goold. Inspired by the Sidney Lumet film of the same name, Jon Bernthal and Ebon Moss-Bachrach star as Sonny and Sal, two men who attempt to rob a bank. What follows is a harrowing journey based on true events that is already packing the Broadway house.

Every Brilliant Thing at the Hudson Theatre

Every Brilliant Thing

Every Brilliant Thing, penned by Duncan Macmillan with Jonny Donahoe, makes its Broadway debut at the Hudson Theatre under the direction of Macmillan and Jeremy Herrin. Starring Daniel Radcliffe, the production traces its origins back to a small-scale solo piece before expanding into a full-length theatrical experience. Since then, it has built an international reputation, with celebrated runs at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, an acclaimed Off-Broadway engagement at the Barrow Street Theatre, a West End transfer, and performances staged in more than 80 countries.

Todd Haimes Theatre

Fallen Angels

Fallen Angels, written by Noël Coward and directed by Scott Ellis, plays at the Todd Haimes Theatre and stars Kelli O’Hara and Rose Byrne as two women navigating a very uncomfortable situation when a former lover shows back up in their lives. O’Hara is a Tony Award winner best known for The King and I, South Pacific, and The Bridges of Madison County, and popular comedy star Byrne is known for Bridesmaids, Neighbors, and Platonic.

Giant at the Music Box Theatre

Giant

Giant, written by Mark Rosenblatt and directed by Nicholas Hytner, plays at the Music Box Theatre after its hit run in London. John Lithgow reprises his role as Roald Dahl, who we see in the middle of a scandal. The play won three Olivier Award including the Olivier Award for Best New Play.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which won the Tony Award for Best Play, continues to captivate audiences as one of Broadway’s most popular productions. Expanding the beloved Wizarding World, the story follows the next generation—Albus Potter and Scorpius Malfoy—as they grapple with friendship, identity, and the weight of their family legacies. Adding to the excitement, Tom Felton has returned to the role of Draco Malfoy, which he originally portrayed in the blockbuster film franchise.

Joe Turner’s Come and Gone

Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, written by August Wilson and directed by Debbie Allen, plays at the Barrymore Theatre starring Taraji P. Henson and Cedric the Entertainer. Set in early 1900s Pittsburgh and following Seth and Bertha who run a Black boardinghouse, the show follows a lodger and his newly arrived daughter, who brings up painful memories and hope for the future.  

Oh, Mary! at the Lyceum

Oh, Mary!

Oh, Mary! offers a wildly inventive and comedic take on Mary Todd Lincoln, portraying her as a larger-than-life figure obsessed with fame and performance. In this irreverent reimagining, Mary indulges in drinking, pursues acting lessons, and drives Abraham Lincoln to distraction with her theatrical ambitions. Following a hit Off-Broadway run, the show has quickly become one of the season’s hottest tickets. The current cast features John Cameron Mitchell alongside Simu Liu. Maya Rudolph stars as Mary starting April 28th!

Proof arrives on Broadway with Don Cheadle and Ayo Edebiri making their Broadway debuts in Thomas Kail’s production of David Auburn’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama. The play follows a brilliant but troubled young woman grappling with her late father’s mathematical legacy and questions about her own mind. Cheadle, known for Hotel Rwanda, his role as Rhodey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and series like House of Lies and Black Monday, shares the stage with Edebiri, the Emmy-winning breakout from The Bear, Theater Camp, and Bottoms.

Stranger Things: The First Shadow dives into the origins of Hawkins in a suspenseful theatrical prequel to the hit Stranger Things. Set well before the timeline of the television show, the play reveals the town’s earliest mysteries, from secretive experiments to the emergence of dark, otherworldly forces. Devoted fans will also notice carefully placed connections that tie directly into the series’ final season on Netflix.

The Balusters

The Balusters brings suburban satire to the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre in a new play by David Lindsay-Abaire, directed by Kenny Leon. What begins as a simple neighborhood association debate over adding a stop sign to a charming street corner quickly spirals into chaos. Lindsay-Abaire, the Pulitzer Prize winner behind Rabbit Hole and Kimberly Akimbo, is known for blending humor with emotional depth, while Tony winner Leon, celebrated for A Raisin in the Sun, Fences, and Purlie Victorious, brings his eye to this comedy about how small issues can expose big divides.

The Fear of 13

The Fear of 13, written by Lindsey Ferrentino and directed by David Cromer, plays at the James Earl Jones Theatre after a hit run on the West End. This new play stars Adrien Brody and Tessa Thompson, both reprising their performances from the London production. Set in a prison and examining the justice system, this show features two lauded performances by Brody (The Pianist, The Brutalist) and Thompson (Westworld, Creed, Passing).
