Starring Tony Award winner James Monroe Iglehart (Aladdin, Spamalot, Hamilton) as Louis Armstrong, A Wonderful World tells the story of Armstrong’s rise from the New Orleans jazz scene to international stardom. Featuring timeless hits like “What a Wonderful World” and “When You’re Smiling”, the musical showcases Armstrong’s unique impact on music and culture and how it shaped his life.
Directed by Christopher Renshaw and co-conceived by Renshaw and Andrew Delaplaine, A Wonderful World: The Louis Armstrong Musical features a book by Aurin Squire (This Is Us), choreography by Rickey Tripp (Once On This Island), and music direction by Michael O. Mitchell.

A Wonderful World: The Louis Armstrong Musical began in 2019 where it was commissioned by Michel Hausmann, artistic director of Miami New Drama. The musical made its world premiere in Miami in 2021 with the roles of Louis Armstrong, Daisy Parker, and Lil Hardin played by Juson Williams, Christina Sajous, and Allison Seemmes respectively.
Following its world premiere production, the musical was workshopped in New Orleans at the Saenger Theater and in Chicago at the Cadillac Palace Theatre with Tony Award winner James Monroe Iglehart taking on the titular role of Louis Armstrong. A Wonderful World began performances on Broadway on October 16, 2024 and officially opened on November 11, 2024. The cast included James Monroe Iglehart reprising his role as Louis Armstrong, who also took on the duty of co-director alongside Christina Sajous and Christopher Renshaw. Iglehart was joined by Darlesia Cearcy as Lucille Wilson, Kim Exum as Alpha Smith, Dionne Figgins as Daisy Parker, Jennie Harney-Fleming as Lil Hardin, and James T. Lane as the Louis Armstrong alternate. Branford Marsalis joined the production as the orchestrator with choreography by Rickey Tripp. Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award nominee Vanessa Williams serves as a co-producer alongside lead producers Thomas E Rodgers Jr, Renee Delaplaine Rodgers and Martian Entertainment (Gregory Rae & Carl D. White).
