Theater History

The Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, originally named the Royale, was built in 1927 by the Chanin Brothers along with the nearby Majestic Theatre and the John Golden Theatre (originally called Theatre Masque). All three theaters are now run by the Shuberts, who renamed the theatre Bernard B. Jacobs after the president of the Shubert Organization. Recent productions include Parade, Company, The Color Purple, Once, and The Mountaintop.

Based on S.E. Hinton’s novel and Francis Ford Coppola’s iconic film, The Outsider brings the streets of 1967 Tulsa, Oklahoma to the Broadway stage. The musical follows Ponyboy Curtis and his best friend Johnny Cade and their family of greasers as they navigate growing up, self discovery and their battle with their affluent rivals, the Socs. 

 

The show features a book by Adam Rapp with Justin Levine, music and lyrics by Jamestown Revival (Jonathan Clay & Zach Chance) and Justin Levine. Justin Levine also serves as music supervisor, orchestrator, and arranger. The Outsiders is directed by Danya Taymor, who received the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical for the show and features choreography by Rick Kuperman & Jeff Kuperman. Tulsa, Oklahomas is brought to life on stage by a design team including scenic design by AMP featuring Tatiana Kahvegian, costume design by Sarafina Bush, lighting design by Brian MacDevitt, and sound design by Cody Spencer.

The Outsiders is based on the book by S.E. Hinton and the 1983 film adaptation directed by Francis Ford Coppola. 

 

The musical premiered at the La Jolla Playhouse in February 2023 and subsequently transferred to Broadway in March 2024. The Outsiders officially opened on April 11, 2024 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre starring Brody Grant as Ponyboy Curtis, Sky Lakota-Lynch as Johnny Cade, Jason Schmidt as Sodapop Curtis, Brent Comer as Darrel Curtis, Joshua Boone as Dallas Winston, Daryl Tofa as Keith “Two Bit” Matthews, and and Emma Pittman as Sherri “Cherry” Valance.

 

The Production was directed by Danya Taymor, with music and lyrics by Jamestown Revival (Zach Chance & Jonathan Clay) and Justin Levine, and a book by Justin Levine and Adam Rapp. The Production featured Choreography by Rick & Jeff Kuperman, Scenic Design by AMP featuring Tatiana Kahvegian, Lighting Design by Hana S. Kim and Brian MacDevitt, Sound Design by Cody Spencer, and Orchestrations by Matt Hinkley, Justin Levine, and Jamestown Revival (Zach Chance and Jonathan Clay).

When to arrive: Doors open roughly a half hour before showtime. Give yourself plenty of time to pick up tickets and find your seats. What to wear: Whatever makes you comfortable! Some people dress up for the theater, but there is no official dress code. Children under 4 are not permitted in the theater.
