The show features music and lyrics by Ingrid Michaelson and a book by Bekah Brunstetter, based on Nicholas Sparks' 1996 novel that also inspired the 2004 movie starring Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling of the same name. 

The production is directed by Michael Greif and Schele Williams, with choreography by Katie Spelman. The principal cast included Jordan Tyson as Young Allie, Joy Woods as Middle Allie, and Maryann Plunkett as Older Allie; John Cardoza as Young Noah, Ryan Vasquez as Middle Noah, and Dorian Harewood as Older Noah. 

Prior to its Broadway debut, The Notebook had a workshop at Vassar College's Powerhouse Theater in June 2019 and its world premiere at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater in September 2022.
