What else should I know?

The musical was first introduced as The Hamilton Mixtape in 2009 when Lin-Manuel Miranda performed what would later become the song Alexander Hamilton at the White House Evening of Poetry, Music & Spoken Word.

In 2013, The Hamilton Mixtape was presented as a workshop production at the Vassar College and New York Stage & Film Powerhouse Theatre. The production was directed by Thomas Kail, musically directed by Alex Lacaimore and starred Miranda as Alexander Hamilton. In 2014, there was a second workshop production at the 52nd Street Project.

In 2015, Hamilton made its world premiere off-Broadway at The Public Theater in New York City. The production opened to critical acclaim on February 17, 2015 and was directed by Thomas Kail, choreographed by Andy Blankenbueler, and orchestrated/musical directed by Alex Lacamoire. The cast included Lin-Manuel Miranda as Alexander Hamilton, Leslie Odom Jr. as Aaron  Burr, Phillipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton, Renée Elise Goldsberry as Angelica Schuyler, Christopher Jackson as George Washington, Daveed Diggs as Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson, Anthony Ramos as John Laurens/Phillip Hamilton, Okieriete Onaodowan as Hercules Mulligan/James Madison, Brian d’Arcy James as King George III, Jasmine Cephas Jones as Peggy Schuyler/Maria Reynolds, and future Academy Award Winner Ariana DeBose in the ensemble.

The production transferred uptown to Broadway and began performances July 13, 2015 and officially opened at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on August 6, 2015 with nearly the entire company from The Public Theatre. Brian d’Arcy James, who originated the role of King George III off-Broadway was starring in the musical Something Rotten!, so Jonathan Groff joined the company in that role on Broadway. Javier Muñoz was another new addition as the alternate for Alexander Hamilton. The Broadway production featured sets by David Korins, costumes by Paul Tazewell, lighting by Howell Binkley, and sound by Nevin Steinberg.

The Broadway production was filmed with the original cast in 2016, and released on Disney+ in 2020.

Hamilton has since become a true cultural phenomena with  productions all over the US and the world including Chicago, Los Angeles, Puerto Rico, London, Australia, Hamburg and more.
