Wicked is based on the 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which is in turn based on L. Frank Baum’s 1990 novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and the 1939 film adaptation starring Judy Garland.
The musical follows Elphaba, who becomes the Wicked Witch of the West, and Galinda, who becomes Glinda the Good before and after Dorothy arrives in Oz.
