About Small Mouth Sounds
Small Mouth Sounds makes its Broadway debut at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre in 2027 with a major ensemble cast. Six people attend a silent retreat hoping to get away from the pressures of ordinary life and emerge transformed. Under instructions to minimize speech, they discover that physical behavior, awkward misunderstandings and uncomfortable truths communicate more than carefully chosen words ever could. The result is a comedy-drama built around silence, vulnerability and the search for inner peace.
Playwright Bess Wohl previously developed the piece Off-Broadway, and Joe Mantello directs the Broadway production. The announced cast includes Julia Roberts, Paul Rudd, Sarah Paulson, Martin Freeman, Greta Lee and Isaac Powell. Preview performances begin February 18, 2027, with an official opening scheduled for March 18. A closing date, running time and intermission details have not yet been announced.
The production contains mature material, including nudity, and is recommended for audiences 18 and older. To protect the performers' privacy, the production also plans phone-free performances using Yondr pouches that hold each guest's device until the end of the show. Tickets are not yet on sale.
