About Downstate
Downstate made waves when it played Off-Broadway in 2022, and now it finally comes to Broadway’s Booth Theatre, where it plays for a limited 12-week run. Written by Bruce Norris and directed by Joe Mantello, The New York Times called it a “deep, dark tragicomedy” and The New York Post asks, “how can you miss the play that will thoroughly piss off half of America?” That potential to provoke is due to the play’s subject matter: it is set in a group home where four men, all convicted of sexual crimes against children, live after being released from prison. When a survivor shows up demanding answers, questions of justice, vengeance, and trauma are brought into sharp focus.
“It uses the tools of theater—imagination, nuance, empathy, irony—to make space for a conversation that seems hardly possible anywhere else…Brace yourself, and see it.”
Time Out New York “The must-see play of the fall. It powerfully reclaims the stage as a home for dangerous ideas, a place where the thoughts we would rather ignore confront us — not with startling moral clarity, but sublime doubt.”
