Stephen Sondheim is a composer and lyricist known for his contribution to musical theater. In this article, we’ll walk you through his many award-winning musicals, let you know what musicals you can watch on stage right now, and show you how his work continues to influence new artists and our culture today.

Who Is Stephen Sondheim?

Stephen Joshua Sondheim was born in 1930 and is an American composer-lyricist who created some of the most famous musicals in history and has left a lasting impact on both American musical theater and musical theater as an art form. Sondheim grew up in New York’s Upper West Side, and later Pennsylvania, where he attended a Quaker prep school, George School, before enrolling at Williams College. Over the course of his life, he won multiple Tony Awards (including a lifetime achievement award), a Pulitzer Prize, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, an Academy Award, and multiple Grammy, Drama Desk, and Olivier Awards (including the Olivier Special Award, an Olivier Award which recognizes lifetime achievement in British commercial theater). He also had a Broadway Theater named after him in 2010. Sondheim died in November 2021 at the age of 91, and The New York Times obituary referred to him as “theater’s most revered and influential composer-lyricist of the last half of the 20th century and the driving force behind some of Broadway’s most beloved and celebrated shows.”

A Comprehensive List of Stephen Sondheim Musicals:

Saturday Night

Saturday Night was meant to open on Broadway in 1955, but was unfortunately shelved when the show’s lead producer, Lemuel Ayers, died. The show was based on the play Front Porch in Flatbush by Julius J. Epstein and Philip G. Epstein, who also wrote the book for the musical adaptation. Stephen Sondheim provided the music and lyrics. While the musical never made it to Broadway, it was eventually produced in Chicago, off-Broadway in New York, and ran on the West End in 2009.

West Side Story became Sondheim’s Broadway debut when it opened in 1957. Conceived and directed by Jerome Robbins with music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and book by Arthur Laurents, West Side Story has gone on to be one of the most famous musicals of all time. The original production launched Chita Rivera, who played Anita, to fame, and since then West Side Story has been revived four times on Broadway, and has been adapted into film twice, first in 1961 directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins, and then again in 2021 directed by Steven Spielberg

Where Can I Find Out Even More About Stephen Sondheim?

HAT BOX COLLECTION

HAT BOX COLLECTION: There’s no better source than the man himself. One of the most celebrated books about Broadway, Stephen Sondheim’s Hat Box Collection is a must-have for any musical theatre lover. The collection is made up of two books, “Finishing the Hat” and “Look, I Made a Hat,” and includes lyrics from Stephen Sondheim’s most popular shows like West Side Story, Sweeney Todd, Sunday in the Park with George, and Into the Woods, annotated with anecdotes, pointed observations, and invaluable advice from one of the greatest songwriters of our time.

PUTTING IT TOGETHER

PUTTING IT TOGETHER: This book by James Lapine, Putting It Together: How Stephen Sondheim and I Created “Sunday in the Park with George," chronicles the two-year odyssey of creating the iconic Broadway musical Sunday in the Park with George. Through conversations between Lapine and Sondheim, as well as most of the production team, and with a treasure trove of personal photographs, sketches, script notes, and sheet music, the two Broadway icons lift the curtain on their beloved musical. Putting It Together is a deeply personal remembrance of their collaboration and friendship and the highs and lows of the journey that resulted in the beloved Pulitzer Prize–winning classic.

DOCUMENTARIES AND FILMED PERFORMANCES: The documentary “Six by Sondheim” explores Sondheim’s legendary career through the lens of six of his most popular songs. “The Best Worst Thing That Ever Could Have Happened” is a documentary about the making of the musical Merrily We Roll Along – the original production closed after only 16 performances, and this documentary includes interviews with the cast and creators. “Sondheim! The Birthday Concert” celebrates Sondheim’s 80th Birthday with performances by Laura Benanti, Michael Cerveris, Victoria Clark, Joanna Gleason, Nathan Gunn, Patti LuPone, Marin Mazzie, Audra McDonald, Bernadette Peters, and more. And “Take Me to the World: a Sondheim 90th Birthday Celebration” celebrated Sondheim’s 90th birthday with a series of zoom performances (it took place during Covid.)

CAMEOS AND POP CULTURE INFLUENCE: Sondheim occasionally made cameos as himself; he appears in the movie Camp, and made vocal cameos in “The Simpsons” and in the movie Tick, Tick…Boom!, directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Sondheim and his work have been featured in shows and movies like “The Office,” “South Park,” “Desperate Housewives,” “Billions,” Marriage Story, Knives Out, and Joker, and he even wrote on occasion for tv shows like “Dick Tracy” (he wrote 5 songs) and movies like The Birdcage (he wrote “Little Dream.”) When speaking to BBC Music Magazine, Lin-Manuel Miranda said, “Anyone who tells you that Sondheim isn’t an influence on their music or their work is lying. They’re either chasing him and emulating him or they’re consciously running from him. That’s how big his legacy is.”

PERSONAL LETTERS: After Sondheim’s death, an Instagram account, sondheimletters, has been compiling letters from Sondheim as he responded to his many friends, peers, and fans.
