Adapted from the 1992 Disney animated film, Aladdin is a Broadway show famous for transporting audiences to a whole new world! Since it opened at the New Amsterdam Theatre on 8th Avenue in 2014, it has captivated audiences in New York City and the globe.

An Introduction to Aladdin on Broadway

Notable contributions from composer Alan Menken, lyricists Howard Ashman & Tim Rice, and director Casey Nicholaw are a major part of what has made this show so successful. In fact, the musical was nominated for five Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score Written for the Theatre, and Best Choreography. James Monroe Iglehart won the Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical for his role as the Genie, a character originally made beloved by Robin Williams in the animated film.

While the original film was in development, creators were inspired by the jazz musicians Cab Calloway and Fats Waller when developing the role of Genie but ultimately went in another direction; the creative team for the Broadway version of Aladdin has returned to that original seed of inspiration and given it new life in their production. The whole family can enjoy this story of discovering your true potential through love and friendship despite the societal expectations that try to box you in. This magic carpet ride of a show is teeming with color and wonder. Continue reading below to learn how to win discounted lottery tickets to Aladdin!
