Best Los Angeles Musicals Running in 2024 & 2025

New York may be synonymous with Broadway musicals, but Los Angeles and the nearby cities of Costa Mesa and Pasadena have flourishing musical theater scenes as well. Many touring Broadway shows play at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre while theaters like Center Theatre Group, South Coast Repertory, and Pasadena Playhouse create brilliant new works attracting both local and national talent. Other popular venues include the Geffen Playhouse, A Noise Within, and the Fox Performing Arts Center. Here are the some of the best musicals running in 2024!

Welcome to musical comedy heaven! Featuring one of the most iconic scores of all time by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill, an updated book from Harvey Fierstein based on the original classic by Isobel Lennart, tap choreography by Ayodele Casel, choreography by Ellenore Scott, and direction from Michael Mayer, this love letter to the theater has the whole shebang! The sensational Broadway revival dazzles as it travels across the United States with celebrated classic songs, including “Don’t Rain On My Parade,” “I’m the Greatest Star,” and “People.” This bittersweet comedy is the story of the indomitable Fanny Brice, a girl from the Lower East Side who dreamed of a life on the stage. Everyone told her she’d never be a star, but then something funny happened—she became one of the most beloved performers in history, shining brighter than the brightest lights of Broadway.

Originally a South Coast Repertory world premiere, the Tony Award-nominated play returns as a musical. Refreshed, reimagined and elevated by a breathtaking score, this modern fable soars through the peaks and valleys of love—the perfect salve for our disconnected times.

Based on the beloved film and directed by four-time Tony Award® winner Jerry Zaks, MRS. DOUBTFIRE tells the hysterical and heartfelt story of an out-of-work actor who will do anything for his kids.

HAMILTON, with book, music, and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, direction by Thomas Kail, choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler, and orchestrations and co-arrangement by Alex Lacamoire, is based on the book “Alexander Hamilton” by Ron Chernow. Following the life of founding father Alexander Hamilton, this musical has become a global blockbuster and won 11 Tony Awards including Best Musical.

Running September 4 to October 13, 2024 at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre.

KIMBERLY AKIMBO features Tony Award-winning book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire (Rabbit Hole), a Tony Award-winning score by Jeanine Tesori (Fun Home), choreography by Danny Mefford (Dear Evan Hansen) and direction by Tony-nominated director Jessica Stone. Kimberly is about to turn 16 and recently moved with her family to a new town in suburban New Jersey. In this “howlingly funny heartbreaker of a show” (The New Yorker), Kim is forced to navigate family dysfunction, a rare genetic condition, her first crush…and possible felony charges. Ever the optimist, she is determined to find happiness against all odds and embark on a great adventure.
